FOOD IN FILM

Chaired by Tim Foster, writer and director of Silent Sound Films

Panellists: Sami Zubaida, reader in sociology at Birkbeck; Cathy Greenhalgh, writer, film maker and senior lecturer in cinematography at LCP School of Media; Pat Mire: writer, producer and director Dirty Rice; Debbie Brodie, food stylist on Felicia’s Journey and Hotel Splendide; and Clare Ferguson, television commercials food stylist.

What is the metaphorical role of food in film? How can it be used to convey on one hand, the subtle expressions of social class and on another, the most explosive of passions? And what are the practical problems of cooking and presenting food for the camera? How can the arrangement and colour of food contribute to the story’s atmosphere and emotional setting? This session is a must for catering and film students. Props of film food will be on display.

Seating is limited, so reserve your place early!

BRUNCH OPERETTA   London premiere
Divas Enjoy a champagne brunch and savour the culinary wit and infectious musical score, sung by Margery Bruce, Carol Bishop, Suzane Walker and Gillian Wormley, with music by Betty Rose and libretto by Marian Lines

‘Definitely Divas’ presents ‘Lunch at the Cooked Goose.’ The vivacious all women quartet hits the fiesta with a charming music theatre piece, mixing champagne with

Chopin and hilarity with Handel.

In a private room of the newly opened restaurant ‘The Cooked Goose’ , the scene is set for a reunion of four college friends. Twenty five years have passed – six marriages, three divorces, the odd affair and one or two diets. While some have reached the top, others are still stuck in their starting blocks. Will it be a jolly reunion or a recipe for disaster?

SONIC CATERING BAND

Shakespeare may have described music as the "food of love" but for these electronic sound alchemists, a love of food is the stuff of music. Devoted to the art of concocting Dada Cuisine, the band’s experimental music is derived purely from the sound of cooking. Besides charting the different course of a meal without artificial instrumentation, every dish, after performance, is consumed by all members of the public.
